Going to see the 50th anniversary of A Bout de Souffle (Breathless) tonight, a movie I have never seen but which is apparently super super amazing and important. And, subtitles! But, AIR CONDITIONING! Everybody wins.
The print was great, a better translation definitely, but I think I didn't have the best reaction to it. I'm trying to sort through my feelings about it for a post, but essentially, I couldn't really see what all the fuss was about.
Breathless essentially started the French New Wave and a new way of approaching filmmaking (not Hollywood which had dominated France post-WWII). In 1960, this movie, The 400 Blows, and Hiroshima Mon Amor through cinema for a loop...one of the most influential film movements ever. Okay I'll stop being a film geek now. ;-)
I'm not crazy about Breathless either... Bande a part is my favorite Godard.
